Firefly squid grow 6-9 centimetres long and contain thousands of photophores which emit a fluorescent, deep blue light. Toyama Bay is famous for large schools of fluorescing firefly squids floating along the coastline during the spring. The incredible mass of luminous blue lights creates a romantic and mesmerising visual spectacle. This firefly squid “self-drowning” phenomenon was designated a special natural monument in 1952. Firefly squid are a spring seafood delicacy.
